“We are clearly in the final chapter,” with these words, Josh Carter expressed the health of his grandfather, former US President Jimmy Carter, and his wife, Rosalynn Carter, in an interview published Saturday in People magazine.
Jimmy Carter, who is 98 years old, entered a nursing home last February, before he decided to receive health care at his home in Georgia.
The former president overcame brain cancer in 2015 but faced a series of health problems in 2019, before he underwent brain surgery.
Josh Carter said of his grandfather: “Although he is almost 99 years old, he knows how many good wishes he receives and feels the love of people for him.”
And about his grandmother Rosalynn Carter, who has dementia, Josh said, “She is aware of her diagnosis, and she still knows who we are, that we are her family, which is the most important part, and my grandmother is still able to form new memories.”
He added that although “it’s hard for Jimmy Carter to see his wife lose some of her memories, they still hold hands. It’s amazing.”
Jamie and Rosalynn Carter are the longest-serving presidential couple, at 77 years.
Carter, who belongs to the Democratic Party, took over the presidency from 1977 to 1981 before losing the second term to Republican Ronald Reagan.
