The Joint Rescue Coordination Center in Cyprus reported the rescue of 86 migrants, including 61 men, six women and 19 children, whose boat ran into difficulties, 12 nautical miles off the southern coast of the Mediterranean island.

In a statement, he indicated that a maritime police patrol boat and two speedboats participated in the rescue operation off Cape Greco near Ayia Napa. The migrants are expected to be taken to a migrant reception center on the outskirts of the capital, Nicosia.

On August 15, the Cypriot authorities rescued 60 migrants in the same area. The authorities say there is an increase in the number of migrants arriving by boat, with a 60 percent increase recorded in the first five months of 2023, compared to last year.
