The news was reported by Bloomberg a few days ago: Epic Games decided to lay off 870 employees, or nearly 16% of its total workforce. Terrible figures which are unfortunately the consequence of a more difficult period than expected for the studio.
Tim Sweeney, CEO of Epic Games, reportedly told his employees: “For a while now, we have been spending way more than we earned. I thought for a long time that we could get through this transition without layoffs, but now I realize that was unrealistic“.
Fortnite, Epic Games’ main source of revenue, may no longer be as profitable as in the past, despite the successful launch of “Fortnite’s Creator Program”, which allows content creators to sell their creations.
Changes to expect
In his article, Jason Schreier explains that the recent growth of Epic Games is mainly due to the success of the Creator Program, which however would not be as profitable as desired. Tim Sweeney calls it a “lower margin business”, an activity that would bring in almost nothing compared to all the other sources of income generated by Fortnite.
“The success of the creator ecosystem is a great achievement, but it means a major structural change in our economy“, declared the CEO. In fact, there is certainly change to be expected on the side of the studio’s flagship game. Epic Games has already announced a price increase for V-Bucks and certain cosmetic packs which will take effect at the end of October. It remains to be seen whether other in-game elements will be affected by this increase in the future.
