Two identical shopping bags and two surprisingly close tickets. For those who frequently shop in France, this is only half a surprise. The days when prices varied from one to two on both sides of the border are over. This has not prevented shopping tourism – the dread of Swiss traders – from resuming following the strengthening of the franc in recent months.
In August, the Swiss Retail Federation deplored an increase of 10.2% purchases abroad. However, if the current exchange rate suggests that shopping tourism is once again very advantageous for Swiss consumers, another factor must be taken into account in the calculation: the increase in prices in France. According to OECD figures, inflation on food products has been four times higher in France than in Switzerland over the last eight years. The question therefore arises: is shopping tourism still attractive? The weather wanted to find out for sure and recorded the prices of more than 80 items in two supermarkets located in Geneva and Ségny, France.
