Four Corners, Detroit-style pizza in the new ‘hipster’ hotel in Poblenou

What was missing in Poblenou, the cradle of Barcelona’s ‘hipsterism’, was one of those hotels that seem to have come out of the pages of a Portland decoration magazine capable of capturing the attention of the residents and creatives who frequent the neighborhood regularly. It is no coincidence that it has just landed in the area, specifically in the space previously occupied by the old Hotel Silken (Diagonal, 205), the first establishment in Spain of the firm The Hoxton, possibly the most hipster of the world.

Born in 2006 in another very creative district, London’s Shoreditch, before the firm arrived in Poblenou, it already had the opening of a dozen offices in some of the most modern neighborhoods of cities such as Los Angeles, Chicago, Amsterdam. , Paris or New York. And it has always done so with two slogans: create synergy with the local community and not repeat the concept of restoration in any of its openings.

For the space that occupies the ground floor of the new The Hoxton Poblenou, with capacity for 145 diners, they have chosen Four Corners, the first Detroit-style pizzeria in Barcelona. An Italian-American restaurant that, although not very local, is committed to products ‘made in Poblenou’ through a grocery store where you can buy everything from vermouths from Morro Fi to craft beers from Caravelle Barcelona. They also have cans of good quality preserves, Bonilla artisan crisps or Lot’s popular chocolates on a large visible shelf that will surely catch the eye of any foodie.

Four Corners pizzas are signed by famed American pizzaolo Anthony Falco, who worked at acclaimed Brooklyn pizzeria Roberta’s for years. The author of the bestseller Pizza Czar: Recipes and Know-How from a World-Traveling Pizza Chef He has been in charge of devising some of the restaurant’s craziest creations, such as the Detroit-style carbonara pizza, in a square format and with a much thicker edge than that of the focaccia; or the sopressata, which they prepare with pepperoni and spicy honey.

On the menu, the pizza is accompanied by dishes such as the mythical olives a la escolana, which seem never to be lacking in any self-respecting Italian-American restaurant, aubergine parmegiana or some less common dishes in this type of fusion cuisine, such as entrails with rosemary potatoes, pecorino and kale.

However, the great attraction of Four Corners is the Detroit-style pizza. That and the magnificent winery with a wide selection of natural wines that has references such as Amós Bañeres, Cueva Orange or Mas Candí. The beers they serve are also craft and are signed by one of the most interesting breweries in Poblenou: the Garage Beer Co.
