An estimated 35 people escaped injury or worse when a four-story commercial building collapsed late Friday in the Brás district of São Paulo, leaving rescuers combing through heaps of concrete and twisted metal well into the night.
Emergency teams logged the initial call at 18h38. The structural failure struck at number 192 Rua Maria Joaquina in a central zone known for bustling apparel commerce. According to municipal property records, the building spans roughly 847 square meters of built area on a 285-square-meter plot. The ground floor housed a retail clothing store that served as a distribution point for surrounding garment makers. The building lacked a valid Auto de Vistoria do Corpo de Bombeiros (AVCB) inspection certificate, according to the fire department.
Fire Crews Secure Rua Maria Joaquina After Collapse
Four people sustained light injuries and were transported to the UPA da Mooca medical unit in stable condition. Fire crews deployed dozens of personnel and multiple vehicles to secure the perimeter and search the wreckage. Sniffer dogs were brought in to inspect the debris for anyone who might remain trapped.
Officials temporarily suspended portions of the search work overnight due to instability and the risk of further structural failure. By Saturday morning, thirteen emergency vehicles remained on the scene to remove rubble.
The Companhia de Engenharia de Tráfego (CET) implemented roadblocks around Rua Maria Joaquina, the intersection of Rua Xavantes with Rua Mendes Jr., and Rua Oriente with Rua Xavantes to manage traffic around the rescue zone. Photographs from the scene revealed that while the outer facade stayed upright, the inner structure and roof collapsed completely into a mass of rubble.

Investigators Point to Inventory Loads as Primary Suspect
Authorities noted that large shipments of fabric had been delivered to the address throughout the day, and investigations into the store owner and company representatives remain active. Investigators and public security officials pointed to heavy inventory loads as a primary suspect for the collapse.
She received two containers. One was unloaded in the morning and she took it up to the top of the building. After 6 p.m., they started unloading the other one, which is why there were 35 people on site. Forensics will still determine it, but the collapse started in the mezzanine, up top, where she placed a lot of weight,
Osvaldo Nico Gonçalves, Secretary of Public Security
Mayor Ricardo Nunes also pointed to excess weight as a principal suspicion pending confirmation by forensics. Workers inside the building described narrow escapes as concrete floors gave way.

It was a miracle. The building started collapsing from the front to the back and went halfway. And we were in the back,

Another individual on site, Paulo Fernandes, added that the stored textiles absorbed some of the impact during the fall.
It came out of nowhere, a matter of a second.

If it weren’t for that, we would have died.

Municipal Agencies Review Commercial Inspection Records
Earlier in the year, between March 28 and 29, a large-scale fire damaged a billiard table factory on Rua Sampaio Moreira. The incident adds to safety concerns across São Paulo following earlier major commercial fires and structural collapses in the city. Late in October, a massive fire swept through Shopping 25 Brás on Rua Barão de Ladário, damaging more than 200 stores and prompting the Associação de Lojistas do Brás to estimate financial losses around R$ 25 milhões.
Municipal agencies and police continue to review inspection records and storage practices throughout the commercial sector.
