FPÖ – Amesbauer: Minister of the Interior Karner throws sand in the eyes of the population | Liberal Parliament Club

The effect of the asylum brake is de facto non-existent – this year as many asylum applications as in the whole of 2018!

Vienna (OTS) 13,634 asylum applications were already made in Austria from January to the end of April 2023. For the ÖVP-led Ministry of the Interior, this is reason to celebrate, FPÖ security spokesman NAbg. Hannes Amesbauer sees things differently: “Minister Karner throws sand in the eyes of the population. Even if the numbers have fallen by around a fifth compared to the previous year – this is by no means a reason for celebration, because 2022 was the disaster year par excellence in the country’s history with over 112,000 asylum applications. In view of this slight decline, to say that the asylum brake is working, I think is no more than the usual ÖVP asylum PR, which unfortunately lacks the substance.

Incidentally, the 13,634 asylum applications made this year are almost exactly on top of the applications made under the then FPÖ Interior Minister Herbert Kickl. in 2018, 13,746 people applied for asylum in Austria. Amesbauer: “The black interior minister should not take a catastrophic year like 2022 as a yardstick, but use the achievements of the ÖVP-FPÖ government in the asylum area as a model.”

In order to bring down the number of asylum seekers in the long term, it is not enough to constantly sugarcoat the ongoing illegal mass immigration and shift responsibility to the EU, the FPÖ security spokesman warned and added: “On the one hand, we have to support Austria by implementing the 23-point package of measures by the FPÖ as a destination country for illegal immigrants from all over the world and at the same time strengthen our sovereignty over Brussels. So that we as Austrians can once again decide for ourselves who we want to let into our country. We therefore urge the other parties to pass a joint National Council resolution and then hold a referendum on Article 1 of our Federal Constitution. All of these measures are important building blocks for the urgently needed ‘Fortress Austria’.”
