FPÖ Leader Herbert Kickl Challenges Austrian Government: The Rise of ‘Normal Thinkers’ and Popular Support for the Right Path

The ÖVP is currently trying to position itself as the party of “normal thinkers”, now FPÖ leader Herbert Kickl is struggling with a memo.

While the ÖVP and the Greens are in a deep dispute – Greens Vice Chancellor Werner Kogler had described statements by Lower Austria’s ÖVP Governor Johanna Mikl-Leitner as “pre-fascistoid” – FPÖ leader Herbert Kickl spoke up on Sunday with a memo for the two governing parties . “You have to keep reminding the rulers in the black-green government: You are not the commander over the Austrians. It’s the other way around: the people are your boss!” said the liberal politician.

Kickl also lets it be known on his social media channels: “So finally respect what the citizens want from you: an end to the price explosion through the exit from EU sanctions, maintaining our neutrality and an end to illegal mass immigration to Austria .” But Kickl also addressed the population directly: There are people who “vehemently try to make YOU, dear Austrians, feel guilty if you sympathize with the FPÖ, our ideas and values,” it said.

“You are on the right track with us”

“They really want to give you the feeling that you are ‘bad people’ just because you are walking the patriotic path with us. I can only tell you: you are on the right path with us, even if that doesn’t suit some people The concept fits,” said the FPÖ boss. And: “Trust your feelings, trust your ‘gut feeling’. It will not disappoint you. Yes, the free path is not always the easiest, but the past has shown that the rocky path is often the right path. We want to walk this path TOGETHER with you.”

In polls, however, the FPÖ is still flying high. According to the latest data from the Institute “Unique Research” for “Today“(804 respondents, range of fluctuation +/- 3.5 percent). According to the new survey, the FPÖ – if there would be national elections on Sunday – should expect 30 percent of the votes and first place. Behind them would be the SPÖ under neo-boss Andreas Babler with 23 Percent in second place, followed by Karl Nehammer’s current governing ÖVP with 21 percent, leaving little room for the Greens (10%), NEOS (8%) and KPÖ (5%).

Kickl suddenly scores on the chancellor question

But that’s not all: since the blue survey low point in mid-2021, the liberal boss has been flying high – and is now diving into new spheres when it comes to the Chancellor question. At the time, only nine percent of those surveyed had given Kickl their vote directly for the chancellorship, today it is already 21 percent. With that, the upper blue also overtakes the previously leading Karl Nehammer, who has evidently lost popularity since the spring. The VP boss falls from 23 percent to 19 percent and thus to second place.
