“Preliminary agreement between the EU Parliament and the Council on the Act to Support Ammunition Production (ASAP) clearly violates Austria’s perpetual neutrality”

Vienna (OTS) – “The act to support munitions production clearly violates Austria’s constitutionally protected neutrality,” said the Liberal Member of the European Parliament Georg Mayer today, criticizing the provisional agreement presented by the Spanish Council Presidency with representatives of the European Parliament on supporting munitions production ( ASAP).

With the agreed regulation, 500 million euros are now to be made available from the EU budget to support the expansion of production capacities for the manufacture of surface-to-surface and artillery ammunition and missiles, which are intended to benefit Ukraine in particular. “The EU is being upgraded in the direction of a war party for Ukraine, in which Austria is also taking part,” said Mayer, emphasizing that this clearly contradicts the Austrian constitution. “This emphasizes the permanent neutrality of our country. With this step, Austria is also supporting a warring party within the framework of this EU regulation,” explained the Styrian MEP.

Mayer also criticized the black-green federal government, which de facto declared the neutrality in this decision to be void. “We see that this federal government, consisting of the EU-loving ÖVP and the warmongering Greens, wants to draw Austria and its people more and more into this war. Polls show that around 80 percent of Austrians want to keep Austria’s permanent neutrality,” emphasized Mayer.

Mayer demanded that the EU stand by its self-defined commitment to be a peace union and to take appropriate measures to stop more people dying. “More guns don’t bring peace, only more death and more destruction. But we want a Europe that stands for prosperity, freedom and, above all, peace,” stressed Mayer.
