FPÖ – Mayer: Political gauntlet against Hungary goes into the next round

Vienna (OTS) – With the debate about a possible threat to the rule of law in Hungary, the European Parliament, with the help of left-wing factions but also the European People’s Party, is organizing the next political gauntlet against the Hungarian government and Viktor Orban

Liberal MEP Georg Mayer described today’s debate on the “threat to the rule of law in Hungary” as a “political gauntlet”. “Of course, certain factions want to put this issue back on the agenda because the Hungarian government and Viktor Orban are not on the left-wing and centralist political line that they should be on,” said Mayer. He criticized the fact that a debate was being started through spurious accusations from the left-wing factions, but also with the help of the European People’s Party, by once again threatening Hungary with the withdrawal of EU funding. “In my opinion, this is blatant blackmail and an attempt to undermine Viktor Orban and his policies,” criticized Mayer and further emphasized that the EU in particular is a very bad example when it comes to compliance with its own rules. “We have a Commission President who is still in office because of her rotten vaccination deals, which cost taxpayers around 35 billion euros. We see in the European Parliament how the two major factions of the European People’s Party and the Socialists are affected by serious allegations of corruption within their ranks. The ladies and gentlemen who accuse Hungarians of lacking the rule of law should rather turn their backs on their own doors,” said the liberal MEP.

Mayer emphasized the importance of Hungarian policy at the European level, such as a strict asylum and migration policy, but also Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s call for a quick peace in Ukraine. “I can only welcome the Hungarian Prime Minister’s efforts and would also like to see the same ambitions from the EU. Instead, their ambitions lie in delivering even more weapons to Ukraine and putting even more billions into a bottomless pit,” emphasized the Styrian MEP. Mayer called for an end to the “political hunt” against Hungary. Instead, the Hungarian government and its plans for a “safe and peaceful Europe” should be supported at the European level.
