Contrary to the previous owner’s promises, the German drugstore chain Müller is moving into Franz Carl Weber branches. Also to the headquarters in Zurich.

The traditional company Franz Carl Weber is disappearing from several Swiss cities: branches are being converted in Zurich, Basel, Bern and Lucerne, as CH Media reports. The German drugstore chain Müller is moving into the shops of the toy store founded in 1881. Müller Handels AG Switzerland does not want to comment on this when asked by this editorial team and refers to its headquarters in Germany. Müller Germany was unable to answer our questions in a timely manner.
Müller had Franz Carl Weber – also known as Franzki or FCW for short – last summer for an undisclosed price accepted. The company previously belonged to the Simba Dickie Group and the Swiss National Councilor and Digitec co-founder Marcel Dobler, who each held 50 percent of the share capital.
For more than 120 years on Zurich’s Bahnhofstrasse
Franz Carl Weber’s Zurich headquarters on Bahnhofplatz was also converted into a drugstore. “Look forward to the diverse range and the Müller shopping experience,” says a poster at the entrance. In 2016, the toy store had to leave Bahnhofstrasse after more than 120 years and move to the less expensive location in front of the main train station.
The traditional business has one turbulent history behind them: Once the stocks of fireworks were shot into the sky in broad daylight, another time a chimpanzee in the shop window caused a stir.
When it was sold last year, Dobler had promised that the Franz Carl Weber brand would remain in place. No changes are planned to the branch network either. “Nothing will change for the customer,” Dobler said in one at the time Interview said.
Last July, previous owner Dobler said the toy retailer was in the black and very efficient. Until recently, FCW operated 23 branches with 200 employees. What happens to the staff is not yet known.
In addition to typical drugstore items, the Müller retail chain also sells toys – including brands such as Lego, Playmobil and Ravensburger, which are also part of the FCW range. It is expanding in Switzerland and is also building new branches on greenfield sites. To date, Müller is present in eight European countries.
