Wembley Park is marking what would have been Freddie Mercury’s 80th birthday with a 30-foot anamorphic mural spanning its 58 Spanish Steps. Created by British street artist Frank Styles, the temporary public art installation celebrates the Queen frontman’s artistic identity and historic ties to the iconic London neighborhood.

A striking new tribute to the legendary Queen frontman has transformed one of London’s most heavily traveled pedestrian corridors. The mural called I’m Mr. Mercury was created by acclaimed British street artist Frank Styles to commemorate what would have been the singer’s 80th birthday on September 5, 2026.
The installation occupies the Spanish Steps, which serve as the key pedestrian link between two of the UK’s most iconic live venues: Wembley Stadium and OVO Arena Wembley, formerly known as Wembley Arena.
The massive installation stands 30 feet tall, but its optical illusion depends entirely on perspective. The composite image only locks into a recognizable portrait of Mercury when viewers stand on a specifically marked yellow circle opposite the steps. Stepping a few paces in any direction causes the portrait to dissolve back into a vibrant array of colors and geometric lines.
Exploring Freddie Mercury’s Personal Passions and Symbolism
While the mural centers on a monochromatic portrait of the singer, the surrounding graphic elements delve into his private life and artistic identity far away from the stadium stage. Wembley Park’s Head of Cultural Programming Claudio Giambrone noted that Mercury’s relationship with the area extended far beyond a single legendary performance, prompting organizers to commission a piece capturing his multifaceted character.
- Koi Carp: A symmetrical abstract pattern features koi carp to honor Mercury’s lifelong love of Japan, echoing the Japanese garden and pond that occupied a prominent place at his London home.
- Winged Figures: Stylized winged female figures reflect the singer’s Virgo star sign, echoing the same motif he originally designed for the official Queen crest.
- Lyrics and Quotes: Selected lyrics from Mercury’s extensive catalog and his own personal quotations wind upward across the steps toward Wembley Stadium, tracing a symbolic path from the private individual to global stardom.

Beach added that the new installation captures the complex beauty of the performer, drawing admirers into his private world much like his magnetic stage presence did during his lifetime.
Sacred Ground: Queen’s History at Wembley
The location of the new tribute carries profound emotional weight for fans of rock history. Queen played Wembley Arena a remarkable 10 times across three separate tours between 1978 and 1984. More famously, the adjacent Wembley Stadium hosted the band’s historic 20-minute set at Live Aid on July 13, 1985—a performance widely regarded as one of the greatest live rock sets ever executed.
The band returned to the stadium the following year for two massive, sold-out shows on The Magic Tour in July 1986. Tragically, those concerts marked Mercury’s final tour performances with Queen before his death on November 24, 1991, at the age of 45. For decades, fans celebrated the frontman through a dedicated mosaic on Olympic Way, though that memorial was lost when the area underwent extensive redevelopment in 2006. The new anamorphic installation restores an artistic focal point to the neighborhood.

For the artist behind the massive project, the commission required an approach attuned to Mercury’s own creative background.

Viewing Details and Public Access
The temporary public art installation is entirely free for the public to view. Visitors can experience the anamorphic perspective day or night, as the installation is open 24 hours a day and will remain on display through December 2026.
