French banking group Crédit Mutuel Arkéa disclosed at 18:53 on Wednesday evening, 4 November 2026, that it had been the target of a cyberattack whose losses it puts at more than 100 million euros. The figure, while substantial, is dwarfed by the breach reported less than a week earlier at cryptocurrency giant Binance, which estimated that 6.3 billion dollars — 5.6 billion euros — in assets were affected in its own hack.
According to a statement from the bank, reported by RFI, the attackers « used Crédit Mutuel Arkéa’s own account to carry out transactions to other banking actors ». The cybercriminals then « converted this money into cryptocurrency via specialized platforms », the bank said, without going through « customer accounts ».
A attack on the bank’s own account, not its clients
The mechanism described by the bank distinguishes this incident from a theft of customer funds: the money moved out of the institution’s proprietary account and was funneled into cryptocurrency through specialized platforms, bypassing client accounts entirely. Crédit Mutuel Arkéa, headquartered in Le Relecq-Kerhuon in Finistère, near Brest, said it wanted « to reassure all of its clients »: « this incident has no consequence on their assets and only caused a deferred execution of certain transfer operations ».
Crédit Mutuel Arkéa unifies regional federations
Crédit Mutuel Arkéa brings together several specialized subsidiaries along with the Crédit Mutuel federations of Bretagne and the South-West of France. The 100-million-euro loss hits as financial anxiety rises, just days after Binance’s hack exposed about €5.6 billion in assets.
