On Oct. 5, Dini Hardiyanti’s family filed a missing persons report at the Madiun police station for the 30-year-old mother and her four-year-old son. Instead, on Thursday morning in Megamendung, Bogor, the pair—identified in police records as Ashaka Ghava El Fae Zya—were lowered into the same grave, detikNews reported. The burial began around 8:40 a.m. Western Indonesia Time, with both bodies in white coffins, as weeping relatives accompanied them to a single liang lahad in the West Java hills.
The shared grave marked the end of a month-long forensic identification process that relied on DNA from the victim’s own mother, and it coincided with the family’s public refusal to forgive the accused killer. Dwi Bagus Martono, 40, now faces charges under Article 340 of the Indonesian Criminal Code for premeditated murder, carrying a maximum penalty of death. The case has also exposed the precarious legal standing of women and children in unregistered polygamous marriages, according to legal scholars at UIN Jakarta.
One Grave in Megamendung for a Mother and Her Son
The funeral procession began at the family’s mourning house before moving to the cemetery, where the chanting of tahlil prayers accompanied the lowering of the two white coffins into the earth. Relatives and family members who attended could not hold back their grief throughout the ceremony. The bodies had been transported from Bhayangkara Hospital of the East Java Regional Police in Surabaya on Wednesday at approximately 1 p.m., following the completion of administrative procedures and the formal handover to the family. An ambulance carried the remains from the hospital to Bogor for the final rites.
How a Grandmother’s DNA Confirmed 15 Bone Fragments
The identification of the victims rested on 15 small bone fragments recovered from the crime scene, which forensic teams at the East Java Police Medical and Health Division analyzed using DNA comparison. According to Antara News, the DNA results were finalized on Oct. 30 and showed a match between the bone fragments and a blood sample taken from the victims’ mother.
“The results came out on the 30th (of October), confirming that the bones matched the comparison sample from the mother whose blood we took—they are identical. So it can be confirmed that the bone fragments belong to the deceased victims,” said Kombes Pol. Wahono Edhi Prastowo, head of the Medical and Health Division of the East Java Police, as reported by Media Hub POLRI.
While one fragment was identifiable as part of the pelvic bone, the remaining 14 were too small to be distinguished by anatomical shape alone. Police confirmed the fragments belonged to two different individuals, matching the mother and child reported missing in early October.
No Forgiveness: The Family’s Stance as Charges Mount
The family’s legal representative stated at Bhayangkara Hospital on Wednesday that they would offer the perpetrator not a single word of forgiveness.
“From the family’s side, the family will not give one word of apology to the perpetrator,” said Ikbal Sermaf, the family’s legal counsel, according to Kompas. “Because what he did was not an ordinary act, but an extraordinary one, involving the family’s innermost feelings.”
Dini’s mother, Hariati, expressed gratitude to the police for uncovering the case while acknowledging the crushing grief of accepting the outcome.

“On one side we are relieved, but this is heartbreaking. We did not actually expect this, but what can we do—it is God’s destiny, and we accept it with sincerity,” Hariati said, as reported by Kompas.
Police arrested Dwi Bagus Martono on Oct. 25 in a hut in Jombang belonging to a relative, after he had fled the area. Investigators seized evidence including a portable saw, hoe, shovel, rope, and two vehicles—a Pajero and a Karimun. The suspect is charged under Article 340 of the Criminal Code, which prescribes the death penalty, life imprisonment, or a maximum of 20 years in prison for premeditated murder.
When Nikah Siri Leaves Women and Children Legally Exposed
Beyond the criminal proceedings, the case has prompted scrutiny of unregistered polygamous marriages, or nikah siri. Rosdiana, head of the Family Law Study Program at the Faculty of Sharia and Law at UIN Jakarta, argued that such arrangements leave women and children vulnerable.

“Siri polygamy has a legally valid wife, but performs polygamy secretly without state registration. The Madiun tragedy reveals serious social and legal consequences,” Rosdiana said during a discussion forum at UIN Jakarta, as reported by the Ministry of Religious Affairs.
While religiously valid, Rosdiana noted that from the state’s perspective, siri marriages are fragile, leaving the second wife and children without clear legal status or inheritance rights. She pointed to Marriage Law No. 1 of 1974, which requires either alternative conditions—such as the first wife’s inability to fulfill marital duties—or cumulative conditions including the first wife’s consent and the husband’s ability to treat all wives and children fairly, for any polygamous union to be legal.
The investigation into the Madiun murders remains ongoing as police continue to gather evidence, but the image of two white coffins sharing one grave in Megamendung now stands as the starkest testament to a tragedy that began with a missing persons report on Oct. 5 and ended in a cemetery in Bogor.
