The German pilots held back in the heat, with asphalt temperatures of almost 60 degrees Celsius. Heppenheim’s Sebastian Vettel in the Aston Martin finished 14th, 1.921 seconds behind, Haas driver Mick Schumacher (+2.092) was 16th.
Mercedes driver George Russell (+0.951) was fourth. His teammate, record world champion Lewis Hamilton (both Great Britain), was initially not used on Friday.

Instead of the 37-year-old, who will complete his 300th race in the premier class on Sunday (3:00 p.m. in the live ticker), substitute driver Nyck de Vries (Netherlands) sat in the cockpit. Hamilton will take part in the second practice session on Friday (5:00 p.m. in the live ticker).
The twelfth of a total of 22 races of the season takes place in Le Castellet, and the following weekend the turbulent July comes to a close with a total of four races in Hungary. Then the summer break for the premier class.
