| French Open: Rafael Nadal in second round; Krajikova lost

Paris: Spain’s Rafael Nadal won the first round of the men’s singles at the French Open tennis tournament. Nadal, aiming for his 14th title in Paris, defeated his 82nd seed Jordan Thompson in Australia. Fifth seed Nadal won in straight sets. Score: 6-2, 6-2, 6-2.

Nadal’s opponent in the second round is Corinthian Moutet, who reached the wild card and tied former champion Soutan Wawrinka in the first round. Moutet’s victory came at the end of a four – set battle. Score: 6-2, 2-6, 4-6, 7-6, 6-2.

In the women’s event, defending champion Barbara Krejikova and Naomi Osaka of Japan advanced to the first round. Nineteen – year – old Frenchman Diane Perry tied the knot with Czech Krajikova. Krajikova surrendered following winning the first set. Score: 1-6, 6-2, 6-3.

Naomi Osaka of Japan, who returned to the title race following a controversial return last year, lost in the first round to Amanda Anisimoya of the United States. Score: 7-5, 6-4.

Pedra Quitova, Allison Risk, Danka Kovinic, Quinn Wen Seng, Daria Seville, Victoria Azarenka and Bianca Andreas advanced to the next round.

In the men’s, Dan Evans, Cameron Norie, Nicolas Basilashvili and Taylor Fritz also advanced to the first round.
