The French government will deploy 45,000 police and gendarmes throughout the country, French Interior Minister Gerlald Darmanin announced this Friday (06.30.2023) to the TF1 television channel as the country prepares for more violence in the streets following the murder of a 17-year-old boy by a police officer earlier this week.
For her part, French Prime Minister Élisabeth Borne said that armored vehicles from the gendarmerie, a military body that performs public security functions, will also be mobilized to contain the riots rocking the country for three nights following the death of a 17-year-old boy.
Borne’s office also announced the cancellation of large events that require the mobilization of numerous security forces or that represent a risk to public order, measures adopted hours before during a crisis meeting.
At the end of that meeting, French President Emmanuel Macron announced the deployment of more police officers to stop the riots over the death of Nahel at the hands of a police officer on Tuesday during a traffic control.
Since then, France has experienced riots every night, with the burning of town halls, police stations and schools, and the looting of shops. On Thursday night, authorities deployed 40,000 agents and detained 875 people.
