Victory for Juan Guaidó as British Justice System Rejects Venezuela’s Appeal for Control of $1.9 Billion Gold

The British justice system rejected this Friday (06.30.2023) an appeal by Venezuela against a ruling granted to the opposition Juan Guaidó control of more than 30 tons of goldvalued at $1.9 billion and kept in the Bank of England.

However, this does not mean that Guaidó or his entourage can access the funds.

The London Court of Appeal ordered that a commercial court decide what happens now, since the opponent is no longer recognized in the United Kingdom as president in charge of Venezuela.

In a complicated succession of rulings, appeals and counter-appeals for three years, English justice determined that Guaidó was the legitimate representative of the country. Also that the ad hoc board of the Central Bank of Venezuela (BCV) that he had appointed could give instructions to the Bank of England as a client.

Likewise, the English justice did not recognize the decisions of the Supreme Court of Justice (TSJ) of Caracas, which invalidated these appointments considering that the judges of that court are under the orders of President Nicolás Maduro, among other things.

At the end of December, the opposition National Assembly elected in 2015, and still recognized by countries like the United States and the United Kingdom, which consider the 2020 legislative elections illegitimate, voted to dissolve Guaidó’s interim government.
