A man identified as Prahalad Gurjar, 40, was killed by a lion at the Sri Venkateswara Zoological Park in Tirupati, India, after scaling a wall and fence to enter the lion’s enclosure with the apparent intention of taking a selfie.

Despite warnings from zoo staff, Gurjar entered the enclosure, causing the lion to attack him.

Although keepers and security personnel tried to save him, the animal dragged him into the enclosure and Gurjar died within about 10 minutes.

The man reportedly appeared to be intoxicated prior to the incident.

The zoo said this was the first time an incident of this type occurred and announced that it will review its security measures to prevent future similar events. Gurjar was originally from the Alwar district of northern India.
