From Car Repairs to Cannabis Cultivation: A Resident’s Journey in Saint-Gilles

It was in August 2021 that a resident of Saint-Gilles decided to rent a shed near Tinlot. Objective: to be able to repair and trade cars there. Nevertheless, in the middle of Covid, business is not going well. This is how he decided to start growing cannabis. A dozen or so plants have replaced the bodywork. He must respond, between August 31, 2020 and March 14, 2021, for cannabis cultivation, acquisition and sale. A last part that he disputes.

The file had already come before the court but given his absence, he was sentenced by default to one year in prison. So he decided to oppose. Asked about prevention, he explains: “I’m really a plant lover.“Nevertheless, at first, if he rents a shed in Tinlot, it is for cars. Nevertheless, given the economic situation, he reorients his activity towards cannabis. “I was a big consumer, up to five grams a day. So I planted”.

Electricity cut

According to him, it never came to an end. “The owner of the shed came to find me because I had problems with overconsumption (Editor’s note: electricity). I was paying €150 a week and when I couldn’t pay anymore, he cut off the electricity and called the police”. For him, it was not a trade. Especially since without light, the plants quickly rotted. For the rest, at most he had 8 lamps, 10 bags of 25 kg fertilizer and 4 bottles of fertilizer.

In March 2021, it is in Brussels that he is again worried with the possession of 3 grams of cannabis in his car. A home visit allows you to get your hands on 129 gr in a single package. “I buy 350 € for 100 gr, it’s more profitable”. While he persists in saying that it is for him and him alone, the police have seized several phones. He recognizes only one. Small problem: on the latter, we find what looks like a deal.

I used to buy my phones from bad people”. The messages were therefore intended for the former owners. On the defense side, it is requested that the offense period be revised downwards, from January 5, 2021 to February 15, 2021. His client has worked for 14 years as a roofer “but intermittently. Since last November, he has met his future wife and wants to take control of his life. His counsel is asking for a labor sentence.

A request to which Division Prosecutor Brigitte Leroy does not oppose, although she admits to having some doubts about the detainee’s words. “During the search of the shed, we found 68 bags of potting soil, 591 used plant pots and 16 sodium bulbs”. Not to mention the 130 grams and the commands in Dutch on his phone. It requires 150 hours of labor or one year in case of non-execution.
