Louis studied at the Royal Institute for Blind Youth in Paris. Little Louis had the ability to memorize everything he heard. However, he could not adapt to the educational methods prevailing at that time. He recognized that there are many limitations to the acquisition of knowledge by the visually impaired. Charles Barbier, a French military officer at that time, visited Louis’ school and shared his experiences. It was from him that Lewis learned about the script that soldiers on the battlefield could grope and read in the dark. Aware of this, Lewis recognized the possibilities before him.
