From erotic vacations to a ‘haycation’: these 8 travel trends will dominate 2023 | Out and about

2023 is just around the corner. Carte blanche to plan all kinds of trips again, so. And according to research, they go anything but to all-in resorts or Disneyland. We’re more than ever ready for alternative routes, it turns out, as long as the trip is kind to our wallet. These are the eight (affordable) travel trends that will dominate 2023.

The times of in our room are far behind us. Planes flew around the world again. Hotel pools were again filled with happy water rats. And the towel rails? They were also (unfortunately) present again. In 2023 that will most likely be different, because we are throwing traditional travel overboard more than ever. This is evident from research by travel companies Expedia Group and Booking.com.

For which destinations exactly do we pack our bags? All kinds of trips, although there is one common thread. Or two. In 2023 we opt for affordable outings and rest. An overview:

In the coming year, a lot will revolve around ‘new wave’ wellness. Or to put it another way: alternative trips to locations where you can practice forest bathing (going to the forest and soak up the atmosphere of nature), fruit growing and body therapies, such as cryotherapy (a treatment in which your skin is made extremely cold and detoxified in a natural way, ed.) can do.

Classics such as accommodations that offer cooking courses, sports outings and meditation sessions are therefore being replaced. The reason: people are looking for more relaxation. Or at least if it depends on the 31 percent of participants in the Expedia Group survey.

The energy crisis is palpable in everyone’s wallets. That is why in 2023 hotels with three stars will rule the roost. Searches for such hotels and even accommodations with less stars already increased by about 20 percent. The number of ‘stars’ also appeared to be an important factor in the research of Booking.com. Travel is a top priority for 41 percent of the participants, although everyone pays extra attention to the budget. Taking advantage of deals, discounts or booking extra early are tricks that are being used more and more.

We’re ready to soak up culture, according to Expedia Group’s research. And preferably in a busy city that flourishes with cultural activities. Tips: Edinburgh to enjoy the world’s largest arts and media festival. Sydney to make it the World Pride. Or Tokyo and Lisbon, both cities that are in Expedia’s top ten destinations for 2023.

The world lies at the feet of the hidden pearls. Because in 2023 we will increasingly book holiday homes at lesser-known destinations. Demand for those places has already increased by about 40 percent, according to research by Expedia Group. Also in the Booking.com study, 22 percent said they would like to discover hidden gems in the future. Escaping the busy life is therefore increasingly a must. Tip: be surprised by locations such as Hertfordshire (England) or Midlothian (Scotland).

The kitchen is the heart of the home. In 2023 also from the holiday home. Cooking together and enjoying a meal at one large table is a must for traveling families in the coming year. No fewer than 60 percent are looking for a holiday home with a well-equipped kitchen. For some, it is even more important than the destination where the house is located.

The demands? An outdoor kitchen, a pizza oven, a luxurious coffee machine and if possible … also an airfryer. The reason why people attach such importance to that accommodation can be explained logically. It saves costs on vacation, since eating out will also be a lot more expensive.

Prepare for the set effect, as more and more trips will head towards movie sets. Think of New York thanks to the series ‘Inventing Anna’ or ‘Sex and the City’, New Zealand by ‘The Rings of Power’ and the United Kingdom thanks to ‘Bridgerton’ and ‘The Crown’. A whopping 44 percent said they inspired their travel planning at such a set location. 37 percent were influenced after watching the series or movie. Sniffing the scent of Sarah Jessica Parker or literally following in the footsteps of Queen Elisabeth, it’s all possible in 2023.

No holiday home with infinity pool and a breathtaking view. An intimate setting in the rustic countryside. That is exactly where people want to travel in 2023. Converted barns and farms in the pastures of Italy, Spain and France and even ranches in the US or the Australian outback have never been more popular. In fact, demand for it has already increased by 50 percent. Now a red scarf and the rubber boots on the hook.

Last but not least: erotic holidays are also popular. More and more couples are drawn to sexual well-being and pleasure when they are on holiday. 28 percent of the participants in the Booking.com survey indicate that they are open to such an erotic holiday. The road to bondage camps and resorts where polyamorous relationships are standard will therefore also be explored more often in 2023.
