Have you ever been to Germany? I want to start my story of my unexpected and incredible trip to Lübeck with this question.

Yes, because often, if you decide to visit Germany, you choose to visit its most famous cities: Berlin, Munich, Frankfurt..

Instead I discovered (yes, me too!) that Germany is full of fascinating places, including small towns full of history, culture and interests. Among these Lübeck.

Lübeck (Lübeck) is located in the north of Germanya few km from Denmark and the Baltic Sea (in the state of Schleswig-Holstein) and has a truly particular position because it is enclosed between two rivers, which seem to embrace it: the Trave and the Wakenitz which intertwine here.

They say that Lübeck looks like something out of a fairy tale: it actually does.

Tiny, you can get around on foot (or by electric boat ????): and this is exactly the first thing that catches your eye. It is on a human scale: and I immediately understood why it is a much appreciated place for those looking for a weekend of tranquility combined with a visit to Hamburg, whether it is a stop on an on the road in Germany or a destination together with the Baltic coasts of Germany.

For its history (and its beauty) the city is UNESCO World Heritage Site: having been a founding member of the Hanseatic League she is nicknamed “Queen of the Hanse”.

In Lübeck, time seems to have stopped: and indeed, at least on an architectural level, this is the case.

In fact, it is still possible to visit his today medieval historic center with the cobbled streets, the Gothic churches with bell towers with pointed tips (The historic center is “enclosed” by seven towers!), the colorful houses with the characteristic Baltic-Gothic architecture with its all different facades, the picturesque medieval courtyards and the “secret” streets to access it.

So one of the first things to do in Lübeck is to visit it… from the water! A ride in an electric boat to navigate the Trave river in the oldest part of the city, it’s a must! How peaceful! Electric boats, in our opinion, are another example of this Germany has aimed at more sustainable and respectful tourism of the environment: it was nice to discover this during the trip!

Getting lost on foot among its streets is the second thing to do 😉

To relax a bit and learn something new they advised us to visit a very interesting museum, The European Hanseatic Museum completely interactive that tells the story of the period of the Hanseatic League, a brilliant period for Germany and for Europe: it is aalliance of city that had the monopoly of the trades over much of theNorthern Europe. We didn’t know this story well, we learned a lot here!

Obviously you can’t go to Lübeck and not taste it the famous marzipan, which originates from here. TO Niederegger, institution since 1806, it is not only available in a Vegan version, but there is also an interesting museum on the topic! If you like it I recommend you stock up here 🙂

And if you want a truly unique gem… in Lübeck there is a tiny workshop, in a period house, run by a lady who had the intuition to make some truly special desserts 16 years ago. With a particular technique she manages to caramelize edible flowers of his garden! It also produces chocolate… and not just any chocolate, it has won numerous awards! (Only by reservation via email, with Evers & Tochter Manufaktur tasting)

Starting from Lübeck it winds its way an incredible network of cycle paths: why not use them in complete safety for a trip outside Lübeck?

We took an electric bike and, in a couple of hours, after a pleasant ride (about 20 km) we arrived at Travemündea popular seaside resort on the Baltic Sea. Itinerary here A fishing village and important port, it has a characteristic seafront, with small shops, elegant hotels, beautiful villas and a long beach.

And this is where you can do something really special: sleep a typical “Sleeping Beach Chair”. A double bed-sized deck chair, enclosed in a basket but completely closable, which will allow you to sleep directly on the beach. The sound of the sea, the crisp breeze in the evening under the covers, the stars, a takeaway pizza and the sunrise, then in front of you. And obviously a breakfast to enjoy by the sea to recharge your batteries!

Yes, because from Travemünde, before returning to Lübeck, you can take another short bike trip. Continuing along the seafront you arrive, following the signs at, Timmendorf Beach, another very pretty seaside resort (about 15 km). Itinerary here. Along the route, partly in the woods, partly on the coast, what is striking is how the coast rises (the famous Brodtener Steilufer) and how vast the bay of Lübeck is which overlooks the Baltic Sea. Once you reach your destination, you return to Lübeck from the station in about 15 minutes, easily loading your bikes onto the train. How convenient! We found this two-day itinerary very relaxing, peaceful, quiet but with that right touch of adventure that never hurts!

And if you still feel like cycling, back in Lübeck we recommend taking the tour along the Wakenitz river (Itinerary here) because it will take you not only to see wonderful residential areas of Lübeck (there are some delightful houses and villas!) but also to enter a place of tranquility. You will see people on bicycles, others bathing in the river, others still on SUP or pedal boats. And of course you have to get some takeaway in Lübeck, bring it as a picnic and find your perfect spot along the river; maybe under a willow tree like we did. What peace!

See you next trip!
