“From sound switches to sharp keys” 5 free tools for Windows power users

Overall, Windows is very nice. It deserves to be the number one PC operating system for the past few decades. Of course, the ruthless destruction of its competitors in the 1990s was part of the reason, but anyway, Windows has since innovated slowly and continuously and is now in pretty good shape. However, no matter how innovative you are, there is always room for improvement.

Third-party software developers and vendors have always been thinking about how to improve Windows. Some of these were even borrowed from Microsoft. best case UltraMonam. Microsoft borrowed the vendor’s multi-monitor taskbar for Windows 8. Still, there are still plenty of tools out there that can make using Windows 10 and 11 easier. It is a helpful tool for everyone from Windows beginners to power users.

Here are five of these tools. All are simple, straightforward and free. However, most developers are sponsored. If the app has helped you a lot, you can help as much as you like. It works well on both Windows 10 and Windows 11.

Soundswitch, quickly switch between sound devices with keyboard commands

Windows still falls short when it comes to controlling more than one sound device. Even on Windows 11, it takes at least three mouse clicks to switch from laptop speakers to Bluetooth headphones, and vice versa (this is likely to be fixed in a new version of Windows in 2023). It is very inconvenient if you have to switch between speakers and headphones frequently for video conferencing.

SoundSwitch by Antoine ApplaroThis inconvenience can be eliminated by It’s a simple program that appears on the toolbar, and if you register a keyboard shortcut, you can easily switch between the number of sound devices (I use ‘Ctrl+Alt+~’). No need to rummage through inconvenient sound menus. Soundswitch supports a variety of recording devices through its own shortcuts, and these lists are continually updated and improved.

Spacesniffer processes files that slow down drives

Managing computer storage space is often ‘all or nothing’. In other words, Windows shows how much drive space is left, but when it runs out of storage space, users have to go through countless directories one by one and delete unnecessary files. Uderzo Software’s SpaceSniffer (Sorry for the funny name)just solves this problem. It scans your entire drive and shows you files and folders at a glance.

It shows how much of your total storage space each file is taking up, so you can instantly see where your biggest programs are and whether there are any hidden media files. Folders you don’t need can be deleted right from within the program, and individual files can be viewed in more detail. You don’t even have to open File Explorer. This is a very cool app that can quickly clean up drive space.

Delete minibin, desktop trash icon

Windows has a Recycle Bin feature, but I don’t use it often. In my case, I use it about once a month. However, if it is inconvenient to occupy a dedicated space on the desktop, MiniBin from e-sushithis is the solution

This simple tool replaces the traditional desktop Recycle Bin icon with a taskbar icon in the notification area. You can tell how full the trash is by just looking at the icon, and right-click to open the trash or empty it right away. With MiniBin installed, you can keep the desktop cleaner by removing the trash can icon.

Sharpkey, reprogram all keyboards

If you have a full-size keyboard, you probably have one or two keys you never use. For example, consider how long it’s been since you’ve had a scroll lock key. If you want to use this key usefully SharpKeys by RandyRantsthere is

Sharpkey permanently replaces the Windows Registry files with the key reassigned contents. Unlike device-specific programming tools like the Razer keyboard, it works at the PC level and works with any third-party keyboard. Save the settings and reboot and you’re done. I used this software to disable caps lock (I don’t use this key). The page up, down, and home buttons have been changed to volume up/down and mute, respectively.

Power Toy Fancy Zone, arrange the window screen at will

Windows 10 includes some powerful window management tools, and Windows 11 makes them even better. But if you’re looking for more customization, such as setting the preview window to be exactly two lines wide in Tweetdeck, you’ll need to use a more powerful application like UltraMon.

However, Ultramon has too many functions, so it is burdensome. In this case, there is an official add-on provided by Microsoft for free. Latest version of PowerToysThis is the FancyZones tool included in . You can easily place the desired program anywhere on the monitor as a window with the desired setting. It works well even in an environment where two or more monitors are used.
