Three Spanish doctors arrived in Santa Ana and will stay working at the hospital and Caps throughout May. The purpose is to share experiences with local health personnel and transfer those acquired here to Spain.

The Europeans highlighted health promoters, an experience they consider a fundamental link between patients and doctors and nurses to detect health problems in people who find it difficult to reach a care center.

Clara Puértolar Pérez, María del Mar Domingo Güell and Enric Ventura Siches, all 27 years old, are from Barcelona and specialize in Community Family Medicine.

In dialogue with El Territorio, Clara said that she was struck by the fact that there are few resources. “You have to make decisions with little time in your favor when an emergency arises. You have to choose to play to care for the seriously ill patient here or refer him to Posadas. We are used to working with more resources”, she said about her first impression.

For his part, Enric compared that all the Spanish Caps have an ambulance and medical and nursing staff in each office.

In turn, the three agreed on the positive of the bond that is generated between doctor and patient, even more so with health promoters. “This simplifies patient care, since the doctor has the corresponding information in advance regarding the pathology that he has,” they explained.

Meanwhile, María maintained that what shocked and surprised her the most is the large number of young mothers in the area.

“Girls who practically still don’t have job stability, they haven’t matured enough either and suddenly they are mothers of several children. The truth is that I was very surprised. Of course, it is a cultural issue, but I think that in turn this leads to another health problem, since there are not enough pediatricians for so many patients, even more so in small hospitals, but it stands out that there is a lot of predisposition of doctors to take care of of the little ones”, he pointed out and added that in his country it is not common to see so many children and most families have only two.

“There, most of the population is made up of adults, many mothers have their first child at age 30 or older, it is because beforehand it is preferable to have an economically stabilized life so that this child comes into the world without suffering needs,” he said. the health professional. They also bonded with members of the Mbya Guaraní village and were amazed by their culture.

The doctors graduated three years ago and the first year they had to deal with the Covid-19 pandemic. “We just realized the sad reality when we found people dying alone because the respirators were not enough,” they agreed.

different ways of life

Regarding what most caught their attention about the local ways of life, they said that they already knew mate, since people are usually seen in Barcelona drinking mate and that it is an indicator that they are from Argentina.

All three highlighted the large amount of meat and carbohydrates consumed in Misiones, although they liked the starch chipa a lot.

They also loved how quiet the streets are. “It is wonderful to see how people pull out their chairs and sit on the sidewalks to drink with joy and incredible peace,” they said.

They anticipated that the next few days will be intense, as they will accompany local doctors and nurses in health operations in the most vulnerable neighborhoods of Santa Ana. This presence of Spanish doctors in different locations is part of a joint effort between the Missionary Association of General Medicine Family, the local hospital and the Ministry of Public Health.

They anticipate that in the coming months two other groups will arrive and that the program will be extended until 2024.
