Fruit-smelling breath could be diabetes

Without treatment, patients with type 1 diabetes can suffer from a number of serious complications resulting from a lack of insulin in the body. One of them is diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), which occurs when the body’s normal chemical reactions do not work due to the spike in blood glucose, generating an accumulation of acids called ketones. According to the MSD Manual, the complication can cause coma and even death.

One of the ways to identify DKA is by breath: if the diabetic patient exudes a sweet odor from the mouth, he may have the complication. The fruity smell occurs when acetone, which is a type of ketone with no function in the body, is in excess and is exhaled.

A person with diabetes is more likely to have CAD if they:

  • Stop taking insulin;
  • Stop following the diet, decreasing the efficiency of insulin being replaced and needing dose adjustment;
  • Get sick and the body is under more stress.

In addition to sweet breath, there are some other unusual signs of diabetes complications, such as:

1. Humor

When the disease is out of control, the patient may feel confused, anxious, irritable, impatient, or out of it. “As there is constant rise and fall in blood sugar levels, some people experience mood swings as an early symptom of diabetes,” says endocrinologist Sneha Kothari, a consultant at Global Hospital in Mumbai, for the Health Shots website.

The bad mood may be due to the fatigue caused by diabetes. Fatigue, however, is a common symptom of the disease.

2. Tingling

Diabetes can damage nerves, usually in the feet, causing tingling or pain. About 10% to 20% of people who are diagnosed with the disease have some nerve damage related to the condition.

However, the numbness is barely noticeable in the early stages. But, over time, the sensation is of electric tingling in the feet, decreased sensitivity or balance.

3. Skin problems

One of the complications of diabetes is a condition known as acanthosis nigricans (AN). It is characterized by the emergence of a dark strip of velvety skin that appears on the back of the neck, palms, armpits or groin.
