Once considered by the government, the sale at a loss of fuel was finally definitively buried by President Emmanuel Macron, who instead asked distributors to make a gesture for consumers by selling at cost price.

« Nearly 120,000 operations» in 4,000 stations are planned until the end of the year, a measure whose effect should however remain limited. The impact of cost prices risks being “quite marginal“, because mass distribution only sells fuels with margins of “a few cents», Reminds AFP Patrice Geoffron, professor at Paris-Dauphine PSL University. > Leclerc

After Emmanuel Macron’s request, Leclerc was the first brand to announce gasoline at cost price in its 750 stations. The operation started on Friday September 29 and must continue “ until the end of the year », announced, in a tweet on X (formerly Twitter), Michel-Edouard Leclerc, the president of Leclerc stores.

Unlike its previous operations, which offered fuel at cost only on weekends, now it is “ every day “. Michel-Edouard Leclerc specifies that “ Each month, we will adjust according to the expected contribution from oil tankers who must absolutely participate in the effort ».

> Carrefour

Carrefour followed in Leclerc’s footsteps and also announced, on September 26, that it would offer, from Friday, September 29, margin-free fuel in all the service stations of its hypermarkets, until the end of the year 2023.

The group, quoted by BFM TVannounced that it was “ of the largest fuel sales operation at cost price in its history “. As at Leclerc, fuel is sold at cost price every day.

> Intermarché

Intermarché also offers fuel sales operations at cost price. Unlike Carrefour or Leclerc, the brand has opted for an operation of this type one weekend per month until the end of the year. The premiere took place on Friday September 29 and Saturday September 30.

The next fuel operations at cost price will take place on Friday October 27 and Saturday October 28; Friday November 24 and Saturday November 25 and Friday December 15 and Saturday December 16.

> U system

On X (ex-Twitter), Dominique Schelcher, CEO of Système U, announced that at U, a major fuel operation at cost price will take place every first weekend of the month. The first will be October 6 and 7. However, he considered that “ It is at U and Leclerc that fuel is the cheapest (….) The impact of the cost price in our stations is therefore minimal for customers because we are already at low prices ».

This is why the brand has also announced a major operation for the purchasing power of its customers: they will be able to benefit from a 10% reduction on all food, beauty and drugstore items (excluding alcohol) every 15 days. from October 20 and 21, until the beginning of December. To benefit from it, you must be a U card holder.

> Auchan

According to Matignon, the Northern brand Auchan should offer at least one weekend per month of fuel sold at cost price. However, for the moment, no date has been communicated.

> Casino

Matignon also announces that Casino will offer two weekends at cost price per month. The first takes place from Friday September 29 to Sunday October 1 at the service stations of the Casino #hyperFrais and Géant Casino stores. LPG, domestic fuel oil and E85 are not affected by this cost price operation.

> Cora

Still according to Matignon, Cora will also have two weekends at cost price per month. No date has yet been communicated.

> TotalEnergies

For its part, TotalEnergies has committed to extending the cap to €1.99 per liter. beyond the end of 2023, as long as prices remain high », indicated, in mid-September, the group in a press release. According to TotalEnergies, the capping is activated today in 2,600 of its stations, on SP-95, SP-98 and diesel. This means that the price of these fuels cannot exceed €1.99 per liter in these stations.

> Fuel check

In addition to the help from distributors, Emmanuel Macron announced that the government was planning new aid of €100 for the most modest households. If the terms have not yet been specified, this aid could reach “ 100 euros per car per year », like the fuel allowance which was put in place at the beginning of 2023. It will be intended for “ 50% of the lowest-income households », who need their vehicle to go to work.
