GAK 1-0 Wacker Innsbruck: Women’s Bundesliga Match Report

The FC Wacker Innsbruck women’s team suffered a 1-0 defeat against GAK 1902 on Sunday afternoon in Graz, a match marked by contrasting performances between the two halves. The result, played at the Sportzentrum Graz – Weinzödl, leaves Wacker Innsbruck seeking consistency as the 2. Frauen Bundesliga season progresses.

Wacker Innsbruck began the match employing a 3-5-2 formation, attempting to disrupt GAK’s build-up play with a high press. However, the visitors struggled with unforced errors early on. GAK capitalized on this in the 23rd minute when a miscommunication between Wacker goalkeeper Sofia Gabriel and a defender allowed Frieser to score from close range, giving GAK a 1-0 lead. Following the goal, GAK controlled possession and limited Wacker’s attacking opportunities.

The second half saw a tactical shift from Wacker Innsbruck, with substitutions made at the interval. Lisa Zass and Borja Gojcaj were introduced, aiming to inject fresh energy and creativity into the team. This change appeared to have the desired effect, as Wacker began to assert themselves more effectively. Gojcaj had the first opportunity of the half in the 56th minute, but her shot narrowly missed the target. Moments later, Marie-Sophie Anfang played a through ball to Sina Gstrein, who found herself one-on-one with the goalkeeper but failed to convert the chance.

Wacker continued to press for an equalizer, with Laura Gutensohn also going close in the 63rd minute. Gojcaj’s long-range effort in the 65th minute also went just over the bar. Despite creating several promising opportunities, Wacker were unable to find the back of the net. In a desperate attempt to salvage a result, goalkeeper Gabriel joined the attack during a late free-kick, but GAK countered, with Kraker running towards an empty net. Wacker captain Miriam Hochmuth made a crucial intervention, clearing the ball off the line in the 88th minute to prevent a second goal.

The match was officiated by Mag. (FH) Stephan Koren.
