A new first-person shooter game that looks so real it confuses the audience: In «Unrecord», players experience police actions through the slightly distorted lens of a bodycam. But the lighting, photorealistic graphics, and camera movements make it look so real that it soon sparked skepticism in the gamer community.
After the release of the first trailer on Thursday, many on social media suspected that everything was fake. Its creators had to release development material hours later to prove that everything on Unrecord is real.
Fake suspicion is a “compliment”
The game owes its hyper-realism to the Unreal Engine 5 game engine. “It’s not a VR game,” explains developer Alexandre Spindler. No video recordings were used either. The makers see the video game as “too realistic” as a “compliment”.
“Unrecord” also does not want to take a position on police work in the United States, the developers say. “We don’t engage in politics,” they say. It “obviously avoids all undesirable topics such as discrimination, racism and violence against women and minorities,” it says. “We also respect and understand people who might be disturbed by the images of the game,” the makers continue. They regard their game as a work of art.
