Gamescom 2026 kicks off in Cologne, Germany

The world’s largest video game trade fair, Gamescom 2026, officially opened its doors in Cologne, Germany, on Wednesday. Jointly organized by the Cologne Exhibition Center (Koelnmesse) and the German Games Industry Association, the five-day event features over 1,600 exhibitors from 67 countries, filling every exhibition hall at the Cologne Exhibition Center for the first time.

Running through Sunday after kicking off with Opening Night Live, the massive convention brings together major global gaming studios, hardware manufacturers, and independent developers. Organizers fully booked all exhibition halls across a total area of 233,000 square meters at the Cologne Exhibition Center, marking a milestone for the annual gathering where Saturday tickets vanished before the doors even opened.

Record-Breaking Exhibitor Turnout and International Scale

The scale of this year’s convention highlights a growing international footprint. More than 70 percent of the participating companies hail from outside Germany, according to data released at the opening. Major industry players including Xbox, Nintendo, Sony, Electronic Arts, HoYoverse, CD Projekt Red, SEGA, Bandai Namco, and NetEase Games occupy floor space across the venue alongside booths from Tencent Games.

Exhibitors are showcasing high-profile titles and hardware ranging from Persona 4 Revival and Marvel Rivals to Nintendo Switch Sports Resort, alongside game tryouts, board and car games, an artist zone, campus recruitment, and sales of game-related products. Felix Falk, managing director of the German Games Industry Association, noted that the number of exhibitors has hit a record high and the scale of the exhibition zone for independent game developers, which is devoted to showcasing the creativity and products of small teams, is also unprecedented as a sign of the attraction of the gaming culture.

China’s presence has likewise reached a new milestone at the convention. A total of 60 Chinese companies made their presence at Gamescom 2026, which is a new record high according to Grace Pan, senior project manager at Koelnmesse. The games showcased by Chinese companies cover a great variety of topics, and quite a few of them are making their overseas debut, ready for game lovers to test at the trade fair, while their cutting-edge technologies are attracting wide attention from the gaming industry and gamers.

Germany’s Foreign Intelligence Service Hunts Cyber Talent on the Show Floor

Amid the consumer attractions and hardware showcases, the convention floor has also become a recruitment ground for national security. Germany’s foreign intelligence service, the Bundesnachrichtendienst (BND), opened its career stand at the Cologne gaming expo on Wednesday to recruit programmers, analysts, and cyber specialists by going where those people already spend their weekends, drawing on a pool from roughly 350,000 visitors who passed through the halls last year.

The agency designed a practical five-step cybersecurity challenge where recruiters watch how candidates reason rather than simply who finishes first. The timing matters as European services face state-backed intrusion campaigns that grow faster than their hiring pipelines, compounded by developments where Chinese groups doubled their attack volume after handing routine work to artificial intelligence tools, and researchers building a fake DeFi startup to hire three suspected North Korean developers and watch them from the inside.

“We see a significant overlap between gamers and key talent we are looking for: they are tech-savvy, enjoy stepping into different roles.”

Julia Linner, BND press spokesperson, as reported this week

By bringing an interactive challenge directly to an audience of hundreds of thousands of technically fluent visitors, the agency is attempting to tap into a talent pool that traditional job fairs rarely reach.

A Pillar of European Gaming Culture and Entertainment

Held every August since 2009 at the Cologne Exhibition Centre, gamescom is the world’s largest event for interactive games and digital entertainment, serving as the industry’s premier meeting point that brings together innovation, creativity, and business development. The name “gamescom, derived fromGames Convention”, reflects the unique festival character that has distinguished the event since its inception by Koelnmesse GmbH.

Beyond the business halls and developer booths, the convention features comprehensive public programming, including a large cosplay village featuring competitions and workshops, board and car games, retro games, merchandise, and the annual gamescom Award recognizing outstanding achievements in various categories. Sustainability initiatives such as the “gamescom cares” initiative address topics such as climate protection, diversity, and education across the industry.

With Saturday tickets selling out before the doors opened and hundreds of thousands of attendees circulating through the exhibition spaces, the five-day gathering cements Cologne’s status as one of the most important locations for the gaming industry in Europe and a centerpiece of European gaming culture.
