At least 200 families in the Raúl Leoni sector have been exposed to an open-air garbage dump for more than eight months. Neighbors report that they are invaded by flies and centipedes.

Maracaibo. The Francisco Eugenio Bustamante parish has one of the garbage dumps largest open pit in the west from Maracaibo in Raúl Leoni. Citizen unconsciousness has reached such a point that the passage of students and neighbors along the roads and sidewalks is restricted. The land that connects the main avenue with high schools, schools and the community court is flooded with garbage in which you can find everything from refrigerators to sofa sets.

While crossing the land that adjoins a bakery and the headquarters of the Communal Council, Nelly Valencia, a resident of block 10 of the buildings, said that so far this year The mayor’s office has cleaned part of the dump only once.

The toilet only sometimes passes along the avenue. People come here from all over to throw garbage because they already see this as a dumping area. Students pass through here to go to high schools and schools in the area. The children have to play on that field “Just as it is garbage, this can’t stand it,” he claimed.

The accumulation of waste has neighbors on alert, they say that the proliferation of flies, mice and centipedes, in addition to the bad smell, have unleashed infectious diseases in the community.

“We no longer have to do it because the animals are getting into our houses. There are children with diarrhea, stomach infections and even bronchitis because when you least expect it they put the heat on it,” said Alberto Barrios.

There is no immediate solution

Those in charge of the condominiums assure that they have complained on several occasions to the city’s urban sanitation department, but the response is always the same. “They tell us that this is our fault and that they are not going to clean it up.”said one of the neighbors.

Last Thursday night, September 7, after a torrential rain that surprised the marabinos, The Municipal Institute of Urban Cleaning tried to intervene in the area, but due to the mud it was impossible to bring in the machinery to remove part of the waste. They promised to return next week.

“It’s difficult to work like this, thank goodness because of the heat of the ovens the flies don’t get in here, but the smell is unbearable. We spend all our time fighting with people because they don’t stop throwing garbage and they don’t understand that we are all harmed. The toilet people say that they They only have orders to collect garbage from three buildings that are up to date with payments. And I wonder, where do the municipal taxes we pay go? because those should be used for the well-being of the community, not for washing hands,” said a bakery worker in the area.

José Brito, a resident of block 24, assures that they are the most affected. “We are afraid that an epidemic will break out because this is not from now, we have been in this situation for a year and they do not solve anything. The mayor did a lot of what he promised and little what he is doing and here we have a clear example, it seems as if this parish did not have mourners,” he claimed.

Insecurity and abandonment

Another problem that is added is insecurity because the lack of public lighting and the weeds are the perfect scenario for robberies in the area.

The only thing that works here is the bakery because the headquarters of the Community Council, the Municipal Police module and the Barrio Adentro office, everything is dark and full of forest, abandoned. It’s scary to walk through there and they don’t do anything either,” said a neighbor on 95th Street.

The residents of the area assure that they have tried to organize to clean this space on their own and rescue it but it has been impossible because the amount of waste is too much, which is why they demand that the Maracaibo mayor’s office take action on the matter and that send the necessary crews to clean this space before the health situation gets out of control. They also ask for greater police surveillance.
