More than half the survival rate of the first recurrence of cancer in one year
In 2019, Katherine discovered that her son Shaoyang had red spots on his body, and took him to a private hospital for medical treatment. Unexpectedly, last year, she noticed that her son’s neck was swollen, so she immediately took him to the emergency department and was referred to Queen Elizabeth Hospital. After being diagnosed with “acute lymphoblastic leukemia” in December of that year, she was referred to the Children’s Hospital for treatment. At that time, the doctor said that the situation was more difficult to deal with, because common leukemias had problems in B cells, but Shaoyang was diagnosed with a rare “T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia”.
Originally, the hospital had arranged for my son to receive a two-and-a-half-year course of treatment, including injections of chemotherapy drugs. However, after about 10 months of treatment, Shaoyang continued to have headaches and found an “early relapse” in November last year. Therefore, the doctor instead performed a series of radiotherapy and chemotherapy courses for a period of 3 months, and at the same time needed to find a suitable bone marrow for transplantation. At the time, Katherine said in an interview that her son’s survival rate had dropped from 70 to 80 percent to only half. After the appeal of Dee and Ian at the end of last year, many fans also registered to donate bone marrow, hoping to help Shaoyang.
Infection with new coronary pneumonia and complications of bone marrow transplantation blocked
Today (9th), Katherine said in an interview with TOPick that Shaoyang suffered many ups and downs after relapse last year, which affected his mobility and failed to undergo a bone marrow transplant. She stated:
Shaoyang originally planned to have a bone marrow transplant in late May and early June, but it was discovered that cancer cells in his cerebrospinal fluid and bone marrow had recurred for the second time. But it was found that cancer cells in his cerebrospinal fluid and bone marrow had a second recurrence. The first recurrence was in November last year. During that period, the (cancer cells) had been removed, but after that, there were many twists and turns, and the transplant operation was not possible. Infected with new coronary pneumonia, coupled with complications, it is difficult to walk. Due to the injection of too many heavy drugs in the lower body, the spinal nerves were severely damaged, and the treatment can be continued after recovery. If you continue to do electrotherapy and other treatments at that time, there is a chance that the lower limbs cannot move or urinate.
Second recurrence life-threatening situation spirals out of control
Shaoyang relapsed for the second time this time. The situation is very bad, and his life is in danger at any time. Katherine continued:
Unfortunately, until now, the bad cells in his body are more active and out of control. Since yesterday, he has been using antibody drugs for treatment, because he has tried all the first, second and third line drugs, and now he is using targeted drugs. (Last year) the first recurrence was with heavier chemotherapeutic drugs that are routinely used. For the second recurrence, oral targeted drugs or infusion chemotherapy drugs (“slinging needles”) have been used. Similarly is a target drug. This time, expensive targeted drugs were also used. They applied for funding from the Children’s Cancer Fund, and they quickly approved it, which cost about HK$120,000. Thanks a lot to them, and the medical team was nice and did their best to help us. Knowing that this battle is not easy for him to fight, his life is in danger at any time.
Shaoyang’s birthday is approaching. He will be 12 years old on June 28 this year, but he still needs to be hospitalized.
