Gaza’s access to emergency aid worse than ever, according to Unicef

– Day by day the situation for the children is getting worse than the day before, says Unicef spokesman James Elder on Tuesday.

– August was the month with the least humanitarian aid since the war broke out. Now we are seeing what are probably the worst restrictions on humanitarian aid ever, he says.

The UN and other aid organizations have long begged for more supplies, but now things are going in the opposite direction. Last week there were days when not a single truckload of goods was allowed to enter Gaza, according to Elder.

Earlier this year, a major effort was made to find new transport routes into the Gaza Strip. It happened after the UN warned that a widespread famine could break out at any time. But since May, a number of routes have been closed.

The worst is in northern Gaza, where in October no food arrived at all.

Elder states that the Gaza Strip has become essentially uninhabitable as a result of a severe lack of emergency aid, incessant attacks and Israeli evacuation orders that apply to 85 percent of the Gaza Strip.

It is happening at the same time that Israel has stepped up its attacks in the north of the Palestinian area, where there are hundreds of thousands of people without safe escape routes.
