Between November 26 and 29, 1812, four hundred pontonniers under General Jean-Baptiste Éblé constructed two wooden bridges across the Berezina River in present-day Belarus. Working in zero-degree water, they enabled tens of thousands of French soldiers to escape Russian encirclement, though almost none of those engineers survived.
Late November 1812 marked a catastrophic turning point for the retreating Grande Armée. After departing Moscow on October 19, Napoleon’s forces reached the Berezina River on November 25, facing a desperate tactical trap.
Trapped against the freezing waters, Napoleon orchestrated a tactical diversion toward Borissov. This maneuver aimed to draw enemy attention away from a crossing point located fifteen kilometers upstream near the village of Studenka. General Corbineau had previously identified Studenka as a viable crossing, where the river narrowed to twenty meters in width and approximately two meters in depth.
General Éblé and the Disobedience That Saved an Army
A critical act of calculated insubordination altered the fate of the French forces at the Berezina. Contrary to popular belief, General Jean-Baptiste Éblé did not improvise without equipment. Without those retained forges and tools, assembling any bridge in time would have proved impossible.
The engineering effort commenced on the afternoon of November 25. Stationed at Studenka, the commander-in-chief of the Grande Armée’s pontoon units mobilized his men for an extraordinary feat of military engineering. Utilizing timber harvested directly from the enclosure of the wooden parish church in Studenka, the engineers prepared for the grueling construction under brutal winter conditions.
Building Two 90-Meter Bridges in Freezing Water
Working across the freezing days of November 26, 27, and 28, the Dutch pontonniers under General Éblé’s command completed two operational structures.
The operation demanded severe physical sacrifices. On November 26, amidst sub-zero temperatures, General Éblé personally entered the zero-degree river to set the foundation and lead by example.

The Crossing Drama and Final Destruction on November 29
While General Oudinot engaged Russian forces in diversionary combat, the remnants of the Grande Armée rushed across the improvised spans over a three-day window. The operation turned chaotic on November 27 when one of the bridges fractured, plunging numerous soldiers into the icy current amidst enemy artillery fire and crowd panic.
Despite the bombardment and freezing conditions, the bulk of the combat troops managed to cross safely. The engineering structures were ultimately dismantled and destroyed on the morning of November 29.
The Toll on the 400 Pontonniers
The human cost for the engineering corps remains staggering. While exact historical estimates differ regarding the final survivors—with some records suggesting only six men outlived the retreat, and others putting the number of survivors at eight out of the original four hundred—almost none lived to see the spring.
