Following the military coup in West Africa’s Gabon, General Brice Oligui Nguema is scheduled to be sworn in as “interim president” before the country’s constitutional court on Monday. In addition, Oligui will gradually use the “transitional institutions,” said Colonel Ulrich Manfoumbi on state television on Thursday.
Manfoumbi is the spokesman for the Committee for Transition and Institutional Restoration (CTRI), which brings together the supreme commanders of the army. Oligui wants to reassure all lenders, development partners and state creditors that “every precaution will be taken to ensure that our country’s commitments are respected” both at home and abroad, Manfoumbi said.
A military coup against long-time President Ali Bongo Ondimba took place in the Central African country on Wednesday morning. Shortly before, the national electoral authority had declared Bongo the winner of the elections, which were overshadowed by allegations of fraud.
The Peace and Security Council of the African Union (AU) met on Thursday to discuss the situation in Gabon, as announced on the online service formerly known as Twitter. The chairman of the AU commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat, had “strongly” condemned the events in Gabon on Wednesday.
