A new study shows that genes may be responsible for thinking about and committing suicide, as scientists have discovered 4 genetic differences that are more common in warriors who killed themselves or experienced suicidal thoughts.
These genes are linked to some mental and psychological conditions, such as post-traumatic stress disorder, depression and schizophrenia, according to the British Daily Mail.
The researchers indicated that these genes may increase the risk of suicidal thoughts, and predict the possibility of facing these mental problems.
Data was collected for 45,979 Americans who committed suicide in 2020, the percentage of combatants was the highest among them, reaching 6146, and most of the suicides were men under the age of 45.
Rates among women have increased by 50% in recent years, with experts warning that increased levels of stress and low self-esteem associated with social media may play a role.
The Duke University researchers collected blood samples from 630,000 people while monitoring their medical reports.
It was found that genes play an influential role in the functioning of the brain and the various functions of the body, and the presence of 4 genes associated with suicidal personalities, namely: ESR1- DRD2- DCC-TRAF3.
ESR1 is an estrogen receptor that has previously been linked to post-traumatic stress disorder and depression.
DRD2 is a dopamine receptor associated with feelings of joy and has been previously linked to schizophrenia, mood disorders, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and substance abuse.
DCC has been associated with multiple psychiatric conditions and is elevated in the brains of people who die by suicide, and TRAF3 is associated with antisocial behavior, substance abuse and autism spectrum disorder.
