(Keystone-ATS) The proposal from the Council of State aimed at granting a free TPG subscription for young people up to 25 years old was not voted on Thursday evening by the Geneva Grand Council. Due to “a major legal risk” linked to the extension of this free service to seniors, the government has postponed the debates.

In the wake of the announcement of the record surplus displayed by the 2023 state accounts, the government offered Thursday morning a free TPG subscription for young people. In the evening, the Grand Council was preparing to vote on this measure, the cost of which amounts to 35 million francs.

But following the approval of an amendment from the Center, which planned to also grant free access to seniors, the head of the Department of Health and Mobility, Pierre Maudet, gave up requesting the third debate. Consequently, the subject will return at the next meeting of the Grand Council.

“Some think that we could have been more generous, but that requires more in-depth work,” noted Mr. Maudet. He recalled the position of the Federal Court, according to which free public transport cannot extend beyond an appropriate share. By adding those over 65, we are well beyond this share, according to Mr. Maudet.

The vote on the bill therefore did not take place.
