(Keystone-ATS) Nearly 2,500 people marched Saturday afternoon in downtown Geneva “to put an end to genocide, apartheid and the occupation in Gaza.” The demonstrators called for continued mobilization as long as Israeli forces continue the massacre.

“Israel uses famine as an additional weapon of destruction,” noted a member of the boycott, divestment and sanctions against Israel (BDS) association, at the origin of this demonstration. The port being built to bring in food is just window dressing, she added.

BDS denounces the “overwhelming silence of Switzerland” in the face of the ongoing “genocide”. The Swiss authorities have a duty to actively engage in promoting respect for international humanitarian law, insisted the association, which calls on Switzerland to immediately cease its military collaboration with Israel.

Starting from the Grottes district behind the station, the procession reached Place Neuve via the Mont-Blanc bridge and the shopping streets, creating significant traffic disruptions. Many Palestinian flags and some Lebanese flags were waved.

The procession marched chanting “Free, free, free Palestinia”, “Gaza, Gaza, Geneva is with you”, “We are all children of Gaza”. It took place under good police escort, without any major incident. However, two graffiti on the Rath Museum are to be deplored. The estimate of 2,500 people was made by the Geneva police.
