George Russell “F1 needs to reconsider engine penalties”[F1-Gate.com]

George Russell says F1 needs to rethink how penalties for exceeding power unit components are distributed.

Formula 1 drivers are currently only allowed to use a certain amount of power unit components during the season, with grid penalties for violating those figures.

As F1 power unit development progresses, the FIA has steadily reduced the number of permissible components over the past few years.

However, nine drivers were penalized for exceeding their quota at the Monza race, ahead of Saturday’s qualifying session for the Formula 1 Italian Grand Prix.

“I think it’s a double-edged sword,” said George Russell when asked if the grid penalty system looked bad for F1 at a time when F1 was pushing for a sustainable future.

“We are trying to be more sustainable in F1, using fewer parts and engines throughout the season.”

“With more and more races going on, we’ve done 23 races with three engines and we’re running full blast with one engine.”

“It’s a huge amount. It’s normal to break down halfway through. I’m sure F1 will reconsider halfway through.”
