Two German alpinists, 57 and 40 years old, entered the “Traunstein-SW Grat” alpine climbing route around 10 a.m. In the area of the penultimate rope length, the rope team got off the route and got too far to the right into the Traunstein southwest face and into the difficult climbing routes located there. The 57-year-old leader of the roped party was apparently overwhelmed with the more difficult route and fell about 15 meters into his last belay due to a lack of intermediate belays.

His fall was saved by the 40-year-old rope partner, but he sustained unspecified injuries to his legs and head in the fall. The injured person was rescued from the wall by the emergency helicopter and taken to the Vöcklabruck hospital. Another rope team that happened to be on the wall, led by a member of the Zell am See mountain rescue service, then looked after the 40-year-old and climbed the wall to the exit. Together they descended into the valley to the starting point.
