German federal government agrees on electricity price cap

After months of struggle, the German federal government has agreed on an electricity price cap for industry and medium-sized businesses. The price reduction should apply for five years, according to an internal communication from the federal government, which was available to the Archyde.com news agency on Thursday. Next year alone there will be relief of around twelve billion euros. Among other things, the electricity tax should be reduced to the European minimum.

Around 350 particularly energy-intensive German companies are to receive additional relief. This might result in a kilowatt price of six cents in 2025, said Germany’s Economics Minister Robert Habeck (Greens), who proposed this level. Finance Minister Christian Lindner (FDP) had long resisted the issue of debt, but according to the announcement he now explains: “All measures are financed within the framework of the debt brake.”

Germany’s Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) spoke of very good news for Germany as a business location: “We are radically reducing electricity taxes, stabilizing network fees and continuing to compensate for electricity prices so that companies can cope better with current electricity prices.” Companies would now have planning security for the foreseeable future.
