The German ice hockey women unfortunately missed the semi-finals of the World Cup in the USA. National coach Jeff MacLeod’s team lost its quarter-final against the favored Czechs on Thursday (April 11th, 2024) after a great fight with 0:1 (0:0, 0:0, 0:1).
After a strong tournament so far, the Germans were denied their first place in the semi-finals since 2017. Czech Republic’s Daniela Pejsova (53rd) shot the selection of the German Ice Hockey Federation (DEB) out of the medal race in Utica/New York.
In the preliminary round, Germany won all four games for the first time ever and thus finished Group A in first place.
While the Czechs had good chances at the beginning, Germany held up well and increased their attack in the second third. Goalkeeper Sandra Abstreiter, who is playing a strong World Cup and was rested in the last group game against China, once again excelled and made several strong saves.
Pejsova with the decisive goal in the final third
The moment of shock came in the third third: the referees counted a shot from Denisa Krizova (51′), which hit the aluminum, as a hit before they overturned this decision based on the video images. Shortly afterwards, Pejsova scored from the blue line.
Darai Gleißner then had the best chance to equalize, the puck hit the aluminum. Despite constant pressure, the Germans were unable to use a power play in the final minutes to equalize for extra time.
