“German Pascal Ackermann Wins Stage 11 of Tour of Italy in Sprint Finish”

2023-05-17 15:39:13

German Pascal Ackermann (UAE-Emirates) won the 11th stage of the Tour of Italy in the sprint in Tortona. This stage was marked by the abandonment after a fall of Tao Geoghegan Hart (Ineos), who was 3rd in the general classification.

Pascal Ackermann overtook the Italian Jonathan Milan (Bahrain-Victorious) and the Briton Mark Cavendish (Astana) at the photo finish during a sprint disputed by a reduced peloton, after 219 km, in the longest stage of this 106th edition. A fall has indeed marked the last kilometers, in particular as a victim the Colombian Fernando Gaviria, who has difficulty reaching the finish line.

The only Swiss still in the running for this Giro, Zurich’s Fabian Lienhard (Groupama-FDJ) put his nose to the window in the last kilometers, but the fall at the end of the race put an end to his hopes of getting a result.

Geraint Thomas falls, Geoghegan Hart retires

Geraint Thomas (Ineos) kept the pink jersey despite falling 68 kilometers from the finish. The Briton lost in this incident his teammate Tao Geoghegan Hart, who was in 3rd place in the general classification. The 2020 Giro d’Italia winner was taken on a stretcher to an ambulance.

A few kilometers further, the Spaniard Oscar Rodriguez (Movistar) fell heavily and abandoned after hitting a pole head-on, again involving an ambulance evacuation.
