BERLIN (AP) — More than 350 German federal police officers were searching properties across the country Tuesday morning as part of an investigation into migrant smuggling.

The searches focused on cities and towns in western Germany, although there were also raids in Bavaria in the south, according to the German news agency dpa.

Police executed five arrest warrants, three in the northern town of Stade and two in the western town of Gladbeck. Inside the apartments and other buildings searched, police found many migrants without residence permits, according to dpa.

The operation was ordered by federal police at Frankfurt airport due to suspicions of foreign people smuggling, the German agency said.
