In Dresden, the CDU in the city council votes for an AfD proposal for a payment card for refugees. The reason for this was the blockade of the Greens in the federal government. CDU leader Friedrich Merz told WELT that he wanted to “take a close look at the matter.”

The CDU, FDP and Free Voters vote in the Saxon state capital for an AfD proposal for a payment card and justify this with the blockade of the Greens in the federal government. CDU leader Friedrich Merz wants to “take a close look at the matter,” he tells WELT.

The CDU, FDP and the Free Voters have approved an AfD proposal in the Dresden city council. The “Sächsische Zeitung” first reported on this. The vote amounts to a break with the “firewall” strategy: This rules out the CDU from voting for AfD proposals.

The focus of the debate on Thursday was the introduction of a payment card for refugees. The AfD had submitted a motion to force the city of Dresden to introduce it quickly.

In the discussions in the committees before the council meeting, the AfD application was rejected by a large majority of the other parties. However, in the plenary debate, Thomas Lehmann, a member of the Dresden CDU parliamentary group, changed his stance. He justified this with a Bundestag debate on the same day, which revolved around the Greens’ refusal to pass a nationwide law for a payment card.

Lehmann explained: “It is now a point where we as a municipality have to set out ourselves (…) we cannot wait until the Greens change their attitude, so to speak,” he said at the city council meeting. This was followed not only by the CDU parliamentary group, but also by the FDP and the Free Voters, who all voted for the AfD motion, which then found a majority – with a single vote! The AfD celebrates the decision as a victory. “The firewall is collapsing,” said Silke Schöps, city councilor for the AfD city council group in Dresden, in a post on the “X” platform.

CDU party leader Friedrich Merz is taking the matter seriously. He told WELT on Thursday evening: “Tomorrow I will take a close look at the matter with the district chairman and the state chairman of the CDU and then evaluate it.”

According to the federal government’s plans, asylum seekers will in future receive part of the state support via payment card – and no longer in cash. There is currently no uniform nationwide regulation, but it is planned for the summer. A pilot project is currently running in Saxony, in which the majority of districts will start using the payment card on April 1st. Dresden, Leipzig and Chemnitz have not yet been involved.
