Germany warns of consequences of Russian cyber attack in 2023

Russia will face consequences for a cyber attack allegedly orchestrated by a group with ties to its military intelligence service, German Foreign Minister Analena Burbock said today.

Germany is among the Western states providing military support to Ukraine in its war with Russia, with President Vladimir Putin saying in December that relations between the two countries had largely “frozen”.

In January 2023, Berlin said that Russian hacker activists took several German websites offline in retaliation for its decision to send tanks to Ukraine, although with little substantive impact.

“We can now clearly attribute last year’s attack to the Russian organization APT28, which is controlled by the Russian military intelligence agency GRU,” Burbock said during a news conference in Adelaide.

“In other words, Russian state hackers attacked Germany in cyberspace,” added Burbock, who is visiting Australia to meet with her counterpart Penny Wong. “This is completely unacceptable and will not go without consequences.”
