Germany’s Asylum Debit Card: A Solution to Migration Problems

Instead of cash, all asylum seekers in Germany will receive a type of debit card with credit starting this summer. What sounds like a bit of digitization of the administration is loaded with the hope of reducing the high number of asylum applications. An FPÖ politician already wants to copy the idea.

It looks like a normal ATM card. For its supporters, however, it is nothing less than a solution to the German migration problem. “State operation payment card!” wrote the German tabloid “Bild” regarding the project, which was formally decided on Wednesday. This is intended to do nothing less than “curb irregular migration, stop internal migration, dry up smuggling crime” – and also simplify administration.
