Over 1,500 cases of monkeypox were reported in Canada last year. Although it is more “rare” this year, Public Health recalls the importance of getting vaccinated against monkeypox, where the epidemic can return at any time.

Remember that monkeypox is a sexually transmitted disease, but can also be caught through physical contact.
“It was vaccination that was very effective in almost eradicating the disease. The only problem is that we don’t know if it will come back, there may be other outbreaks in the world, ”comments the founding president of the Current Medical Clinic, Dr. Réjean Thomas.
Dr. Thomas encourages the population to get vaccinated for a second dose, in order to have optimal protection, ie for ten years.
“It’s a new epidemic that happened like that, overnight, at least it’s not a serious disease. Sometimes, we had 8 to 10 people at the walk-in, we had to isolate them. It was a pretty stressful time,” he adds.
Although it is not a serious disease, the symptoms, such as genital ulcers, could be very painful.
