A single T-shirt, emblazoned with the words “Antifaschistische Seenotrettung” (Antifascist Sea Rescue), has ignited a firestorm within the German education system. The incident, in which a teacher in Bremen was prohibited from wearing the garment on school grounds, has prompted the Bremen and Hesse state branches of GEW (Die Bildungsgewerkschaft) to launch a campaign titled “Wochen der Seenotrettung” (Weeks of Sea Rescue).
Teacher ordered to stop wearing Sea-Watch shirt
The conflict originated when a teacher was ordered to stop wearing the Sea-Watch branded shirt while at school. The administration’s decision invoked a controversial interpretation of the “Neutralitätsgebot”—a requirement for school staff to remain neutral.
Ramona Seeger, Landesvorstandssprecherin of the GEW Bremen, argues that the neutrality requirement is being weaponized as a muzzle. “The alleged neutrality requirement must not become a gag for teachers and other employees in the education sector,” Seeger stated. She added that those advocating for human rights, democracy, and solidarity are acting within the scope of existing laws and decrees. The GEW’s response has been one of defiance: “If one teacher is forbidden from wearing a Sea-Watch shirt, then we will all wear it.”
Redefining the educator’s role in democracy
Thilo Hartmann, Vorsitzender of the GEW Hessen, emphasizes that the professional duty of a teacher is distinct from political neutrality. While school staff must remain non-partisan in their instruction, they are not required to be value-neutral. “On the contrary: the transmission and protection of human rights and democratic values are part of their educational mandate,” Hartmann noted. The union is now offering solidarity to all colleagues who face hostility due to their commitment to democratic principles.
The campaign, supported by the civil sea rescue organization Sea-Watch, aims to foster a conversation about how schools should address the humanitarian crisis in the Mediterranean. A spokesperson for Sea-Watch stated: “Civil sea rescue is lived humanity and an expression of our shared responsibility. Helping people in distress at sea must not be criminalized or politically marginalized.”
Campaign encourages school staff to make stance visible
The “Wochen der Seenotrettung” campaign encourages school staff to make their stance visible. Participants can purchase a campaign shirt bearing the slogan “Wir zeigen Haltung! Solidarisch. Nicht neutral.” (We show stance! Solidary. Not neutral.), share photos, and integrate the topic of civil sea rescue into their classroom discussions.
To kick off the initiative, the GEW Hessen is hosting two screenings of the film “23.000 Leben” (23,000 Lives), which serves as a catalyst for discussions on the reality of sea rescue operations:
- Kassel: Sunday, November 8, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at the Filmladen Kassel. Admission is free.
- Frankfurt-Höchst: Wednesday, November 11, 2026, at 5:30 p.m. at the Filmforum Höchst. Participation is free for GEW members, with all other interested parties welcome to attend.
Further details on the campaign and registration for the film events are available through the official GEW channels.
