After the mishap, Biniam Girmay first held his left eye before squinting the champagne into the crowd.
Apparently, the involuntary cork hit was more painful than initially thought. After the award ceremony, Girmay first got into the ambulance. He was then taken to the hospital.
The team initially did not comment on the incident and the condition of the eye, but Girmay was able to leave the hospital in the evening with a bandage over the injured eye. Team doctor Piet Daneels revealed to Eurosport that the stage winner is doing much better. Nevertheless, it will not be decided until Wednesday morning whether Girmay can continue the Giro.

In any case, the 22-year-old celebrated again with his teammates in the evening, as photos on social media showed.
In the final of the tenth stage, Girmay opened the sprint of a good 20-man lead group from the front with around 300 meters to go and left the entire competition behind. Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin-Fenix) tried to keep up, but had to give up shortly before the finish.
